The average cost of bringing a new prescription (Rx) drug from concept to market
has risen steadily over the last decade from $403 Million in 2000 to $899 Million
in 2005 to $1.3 Billion in 2010 (Tufts Center for Study of Drug Development CSDD,
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, April 2011). At the same time,
the US FDA approvals of these Rx drugs, biological products and devices has consistently
gone down from 160 in 2000 to 18 in 2007 and only 21 in 2010. And the benefits of
these Rx drugs are often overshadowed by their
significant side effects.
Some of the biggest block buster drugs of all times came from plants. To name a
few Aspirin from the willow tree, Atropine from Belladonna, Quinine from Cinchona,
Digitalis from Foxglove and Taxol from the Pacific Yew tree. Over a period of time,
and
especially to address the
challenges of supply and demand, all of these were
synthesized in the laboratory, making them widely available and in some cases, more affordable. With synthesis came the risks of toxicity, similar to other synthetic
chemical drugs. To escape from these safety issues, in recent years, consumers have
turned to dietary supplements and nutraceuticals which are gaining huge popularity
worldwide. However, these are most often developed using traditional methods and
lack the scientific validation and documented safety and efficacy of the Rx chemical
entities. Hence, there is a
tremendous need for scientifically validated products
that combine the safety of natural compounds and yet are validated to meet the rigorous
requirements of testing and manufacture to prescription standards.
Bioved's research focus capitalizes on 4,000 years of Ayurvedic medicine to identify
candidates for novel phyto-pharmaceuticals. Ayurveda is a well documented science
that has been in actual practice all through the centuries; and in wider acceptance
in recent times. It has contributed several key pharmaceutical drugs to modern medicine.
Notable among those are Reserpine for hypertension and Vincristine and Vinblastine
in cancer chemotherapy. Over the last 12 years, Bioved has worked systematically
on harnessing the knowledge of Ayurveda, developing and documenting research processes
and methodologies; and discovering novel and unique plant-based phyto-pharmaceuticals,
OTC products and nutraceuticals mainly targeted towards "Disorders of the Aging
Population'.
Our proprietary N/Rx® Platform has been strengthened by repeated proof
of validation of safety and efficacy of the products developed. We have the experience
and keen understanding to identify bio-active compounds and fractions, and create
products with a strong and unique position in the bio-pharmaceutical markets. These
products address the inherent need of the consumer of improving their ‘Quality of
Life’. Over the the last decade we have met with recurring success on various products.
We have a fully integrated model of “Discovery Engine” and highly cost-effective
contract research capabilities in India. We have built up a unique core competency
with repeated proof of concept in developing and validating plant-based, safe and
effective products that address ‘difficult to treat diseases’.
